Dr. Rebekah Perkins holds a Master of Science in Gerontology and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Utah. Her work focuses on advancing gerontological nursing education, particularly through research on nurses' intuition in aiding older adults with dementia. This research shapes her teaching philosophy, which prioritizes developing students' intuition to enhance clinical decision-making.
Dr. Perkins has developed a geriatric nursing course grounded in the Age-Friendly Health Systems framework, featuring a large-class geriatric simulation to improve competency-based education for prelicensure nursing students. Additionally, she has created an online "Person-Directed Living" course for nursing and CNA students, utilizing modified online unfolding case study simulation videos to promote age-friendly and dementia-friendly care principles.
With clinical expertise in Care Management, specializing in cancer, dementia, and transitions of care for older adults with multiple chronic illnesses, Dr. Perkins' research explores nurse intuition in decision-making during complex care scenarios. Her teaching aims to foster metacognitive reasoning strategies in students to support patient care in a constantly evolving healthcare system. Dr. Perkins is recognized as a Jonas Nurse Leader Alumni Scholar, a Noorda-Hartford Alumni Fellow, and an Academy of Health Sciences Educator Fellow at the University of Utah.
