Lessons Learned during the SSH Simulation Accreditation Journey

Abstract :

Introduction: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) mandates that simulation “should align with best practice standards.” Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation provides validation of an organization’s expertise and commitment to simulation guidelines. In 2022, the University of Houston Gessner College of Nursing was assigned the goal of Simulation Center accreditation by 2027. This presentation focuses on the lessons learned while preparing for accreditation.

Conceptional Framework: The APIE (Assessment, Plan, Implement and Evaluate) model was used to manage the steps to Accreditation.

Description of the Project: The Clinical Learning Team (CLT) began a series of meetings to review the accreditation standards. After analysis, findings indicated that while Simulation standards were being met, very little documentation existed. The journey to accreditation submission ultimately involved the CLT, the faculty leadership team and all faculty using simulation as a teaching modality as the policies, processes and documentation were put into place.

Target population and setting: This presentation is for persons involved in simulation programs who are interested in seeking Accreditation. It will include pitfalls, timelines, roadblocks and the process to submission.

Outcomes: The CLT, College of Nursing leadership team, and faculty worked together to assess the simulation program, fill gaps in the program, strengthen the standard operating procedures, and submit a self-study. An anticipated positive review from the SSH accreditation team is scheduled for December 4, 2023.

Discussion and conclusion: Everything learned in this journey has strengthened the Simulation program and made it ultimately more sustainable.
